Lower Five Realms

Overview

The Lower Five Realms (下五境) constitute the foundational tier of cultivation for Qi Refiners (练气士) across the various worlds. Practitioners in these realms have just stepped onto the path of cultivation, beginning to accumulate spiritual energy (Qi) and temper their physical and spiritual foundations. Because they are at the very bottom of the cultivation hierarchy, they have yet to unlock the profound divine abilities, extended lifespans, and overwhelming combat power associated with the Middle Five Realms (中五境) and above.

Status in the Cultivation World

In the eyes of high-level cultivators, mountain immortals, and ancient Great Demons, practitioners of the Lower Five Realms are frequently dismissed as mere "ants" (蝼蚁). During apocalyptic conflicts, such as the invasion of the Haoran Heaven by the Manhuang Heaven, Lower Five Realm cultivators often suffer the highest casualties, dying in droves when high-level entities clash or casually shatter mountain arrays.

Financially and materially, life in the Lower Five Realms is often a struggle, particularly for rogue cultivators (散修) who lack the backing of a sect. For example, obtaining even a basic entry-level Demon-Revealing Mirror (照妖镜) sold by the Qionglin Sect requires a Lower Five Realm rogue cultivator to grit their teeth and expend their hard-earned Snowflake Coins (雪花钱).

To aid in their progression, wealthy sects often provide specialized resources. For instance, Zhongsi Rice (重思米)—a spiritual crop that looks like pomegranate seeds and tastes like water caltrop—is considered a top-tier medicinal diet (药膳) specifically suited for nourishing the bodies of Lower Five Realm cultivators.

Known Realms and Characteristics

While the complete sequence of the Lower Five Realms is an established baseline in the cultivation world, certain specific stages and their unique traits are notably documented:

• Second Realm (二境): An early stage where the cultivator has initiated their Qi refining but possesses minimal combat or magical capability. Even individuals working as menial servants on intercontinental ferries, such as the maid Chun Shui (春水) on Guihua Island, can reach this realm, allowing them basic insight into the cultivation world's layout.
• Willow Sinew Realm (柳筋境): A critical stage within the Lower Five Realms, formally categorized as a "retaining realm" (留人境)—a bottleneck where cultivators can easily stagnate.
  • Origins: The naming and karmic destiny of this realm are deeply intertwined with the legendary Ascendant Realm cultivator Liu Qi (柳七). However, the exact mechanics of how this realm came to be associated with him, and the secrets of achieving a sudden "heavenly step" from it, remain an obscure mystery in the Haoran Heaven.
  • Notable Exceptions: Breaking the conventional rules of cultivation, there are rare cases of extreme enlightenment tied to this realm. A previously unknown Daoist nun from the Qingming Heaven, who had practiced for only eight years, stagnated in the Willow Sinew Realm for six years before taking a single, miraculous step straight into the Jade Pu Realm (玉璞境), bypassing the rest of the Lower and Middle realms entirely.

Progression

Successfully breaking through the Lower Five Realms allows a Qi Refiner to step into the Middle Five Realms (starting with the Cave Dwelling Realm / 洞府境), at which point their status elevates significantly, and they can truly begin to establish themselves as formidable figures on the mountain.
