Ruan Xiu
The daughter of Ruan Qiong and Eldest Senior Sister of the Dragon Springs Sword Sect, who is in truth the reincarnation of the Supreme Fire God of the ancient Heavenly Court.
Overview
Ruan Xiu (阮秀) is ostensibly the only daughter of the Military School Saint Ruan Qiong and the Eldest Senior Sister of the Dragon Springs Sword Sect (龙泉剑宗). In truth, she is the reincarnation of the Supreme Fire God (火神), one of the five highest deities of the ancient Heavenly Court. Endowed with a heaven-defying destiny and an innate Fire God physique, Ruan Xiu was brought to the isolated Lizhu Grotto-Heaven by her father to shield her from the probing eyes of the world until she could mature.
Known for her iconic green dress, simple ponytail, and bottomless appetite for pastries, Ruan Xiu possesses a unique karmic vision that allows her to see the true nature, karma, and destiny of all living beings. Due to this vision, she perceived the young orphan Chen Ping'an as a perfectly clean mirror, sparking a profound mutual affection. Her overarching narrative revolves around the conflict between her developing human emotions and her inevitable awakening as a supreme deity, culminating in her victory in the destined Water-Fire Dispute and her eventual ascension to the Heavens.
Appearance and Personality
Ruan Xiu is a tall, slender young woman who habitually wears a simple green dress and keeps her hair tied in a long ponytail. She is famous for her insatiable appetite, constantly carrying a handkerchief filled with pastries, especially peach blossom cakes (桃花糕), or sneaking extra pieces of braised pork (红烧肉) into her meals to bypass her father's dietary rules. She wears a striking crimson bracelet that is, in reality, a slumbering ancient Fire Dragon.
Because she perceives the world through a lens of karma and elemental truths rather than human morality, she often appears aloof and indifferent to the squabbles of the cultivation world. She harbors a deep, instinctual disdain for water deities and hypocrisy. Despite her divine detachment, she genuinely cherishes the simple, sincere connections she forms in the human world, treating individuals like Chen Ping'an, Pei Qian, and Zhou Mili with profound warmth and protectiveness.
History
Life in Lizhu Grotto-Heaven
Brought to the Lizhu Grotto-Heaven by Ruan Qiong to conceal her supreme destiny, Ruan Xiu spent her early years quietly observing the town's inhabitants. Because her eyes could discern the "black and white" of human hearts, she found the pristine, unblemished soul of Chen Ping'an uniquely comforting. A quiet, profound bond developed between them, grounded in her frequent visits to watch him work and share simple meals. She frequently intervened to protect the town's peace, effortlessly suppressing out-of-line deities such as the river goddess Ma Lanhua.
Dragon Springs Sword Sect and the Yasui Shop
When Ruan Qiong established the Dragon Springs Sword Sect on Shenxiu Mountain, Ruan Xiu became the nominal Eldest Senior Sister. She took little interest in formal sect management or cultivation, preferring to roam the mountains, eat pastries, or manage the Yasui Shop (压岁铺子) in Qilong Alley. Despite her lack of active leadership, her junior disciples—Dong Gu, Xu Xiaoqiao, and Xie Ling—held her in deep respect.
The Southern Journey
Ruan Xiu eventually ventured out of the grotto-heaven, traveling south toward Shujian Lake with a group of Dali Nian'gan Lang (粘杆郎) and the Ministry of Rites official Song Langzhong. During this journey, she demonstrated her terrifying power at Furong Mountain. Unwilling to tolerate a martial genius targeted by the Dali empire, she casually unleashed her Fire Dragon to execute the youth, a brutal display of divine authority that terrified the accompanying Dali officials.
The Water-Fire Dispute and Ascension
As her divine nature awakened, she entered into a predestined Water-Fire Dispute (水火之争) with Li Liu, the reincarnation of the ancient Water God. Ruan Xiu ultimately emerged victorious, a victory that drastically accelerated her restoration as a supreme deity.
When Zhou Mi ascended to establish a New Heavenly Court, he opened the path for the ancient deities to return to their thrones. Ruan Xiu accepted her mantle, ascending to the heavens to take her seat as the Supreme Fire God, bringing her journey in the mortal realm to an end.
Cultivation and Abilities
Ruan Xiu's strength defies conventional cultivation boundaries, stemming directly from her status as an ancient supreme deity.
- Innate Fire God Physique: She does not need to practice standard cultivation methods. Her mere existence exerts absolute suppression over all water-attribute entities, dragons, and water deities. She is capable of consuming divine nature, karmic destiny, and even heavenly tribulation.
- Karmic Vision: Ruan Xiu sees the world in terms of true karma, destiny (气数), and the fundamental "colors" of human hearts. This allows her to instantly discern friend from foe, truth from lies, and the hidden potential within individuals.
- Fire Dragon (火龙): She wears a crimson bracelet that transforms into a massive, ancient Fire Dragon. The dragon can effortlessly evaporate rivers (走水) and instantly incinerate high-level cultivators and martial artists.
Relationships
- Ruan Qiong: Her father in her human incarnation. He sacrificed his own grand ambitions to guard her in the Lizhu Grotto-Heaven until she came of age, constantly trying to teach her patience and restraint.
- Chen Ping'an: The most important human connection in her life. She was drawn to his pure, unblemished nature from a young age. Their relationship is characterized by unspoken affection, deep mutual trust, and a shared quiet understanding of the world.
- Li Liu: The reincarnation of the ancient Water God. Their relationship is defined by an inevitable, instinctual rivalry (Water vs. Fire) that culminated in Ruan Xiu's victory in the Water-Fire Dispute.
- Pei Qian & Zhou Mili: Ruan Xiu maintains a gentle, sisterly relationship with Chen Ping'an's disciple and the water spirit Zhou Mili. She enjoys listening to Zhou Mili's exaggerated stories and treats both with genuine warmth at the Yasui Shop.
- Dragon Springs Disciples: As the Eldest Sister, she holds the absolute respect of her junior martial siblings Dong Gu, Xu Xiaoqiao, and Xie Ling, despite largely ignoring formal sect duties.
