Ning Yao
宁姚
Overview
Ning Yao (宁姚) is the primary heroine of the narrative and the Dao Companion (道侣) of Chen Ping'an. Born in the Sword Qi Great Wall (剑气长城) to the prestigious Ning and Yao sword cultivation families, she is universally acknowledged as the most exceptionally talented sword cultivator of her generation, and potentially of the last ten thousand years.
Characterized by her straightforward, unyielding nature and unparalleled lethality in combat, Ning Yao eventually leads the surviving sword cultivators to the Five Colored Heaven (五彩天下) as the central pillar of Feisheng City (飞升城). Through a series of breathtaking, unbroken breakthroughs, she becomes the undisputed First Person of the Five Colored Heaven, and later ascends to become a 14th-Realm Pure Sword Cultivator (十四境纯粹剑修).
Appearance
Ning Yao is described as having a tall, slender, and inherently heroic figure, entirely lacking the frail delicacy typical of wealthy young ladies. Her most distinguishing facial feature is a pair of long, narrow eyebrows that resemble sharp narrow knives (狭刀长眉), giving her an aura of inherent sharpness and bright vitality.
She traditionally favors wearing a dark green robe (墨绿色长袍) or a simple black outfit, often carrying both a sword and a narrow skirt-pressing knife (压裙刀) in her youth. Later in her cultivation journey, she often wears the Jinli (Golden Nectar / 金醴), an immortal-tier golden dharma robe given to her by Chen Ping'an, and carries a sword box (剑匣) on her back.
Personality
Ning Yao's worldview is stark, decisive, and relentlessly black-and-white. Raised in the brutal environment of the Sword Qi Great Wall where survival and merit are measured strictly by the demons one kills, she detests convoluted schemes, philosophical pedantry, and empty talk. She adheres to the belief that absolute strength and a pure sword heart are the ultimate truths.
Despite her cold and aloof exterior, she is profoundly loyal and straightforward with those she cares about. She possesses a natural, fierce pride—not born of arrogance, but of an absolute confidence in her own sword. In matters of the heart, she is remarkably unpretentious. She values Chen Ping'an's resilience, kindness, and hard-working nature, entirely disregarding the differences in their initial status or wealth.
History
Early Life and Lizhu Grotto-Heaven
Ning Yao's parents, both formidable Sword Immortals, died in battle on the southern front of the Sword Qi Great Wall. Heartbroken but resolute, a young Ning Yao left home to travel Haoran Heaven in search of a master blacksmith to forge a perfect sword. This journey brought her to the Lizhu Grotto-Heaven (骊珠洞天), where she was ambushed and severely injured by assassins. She was inadvertently saved by the impoverished orphan Chen Ping'an.
While hiding and recovering in Chen Ping'an's dilapidated home in Mud Bottle Alley, she taught him the foundational knowledge of the Hanshan (撼山) martial arts manual. The two later fought side-by-side against a terrifying Mountain-Moving Ape from Zhengyang Mountain, surviving against impossible odds. Upon leaving, she gifted Chen Ping'an an empty white scabbard.
Reunion and the Sword Qi Great Wall
Years later, Chen Ping'an traveled across continents to deliver a custom-forged sword to Ning Yao at Daoxuan Mountain (倒悬山). It was there, sitting on the steps, that Chen Ping'an nervously but bravely confessed his feelings, shouting, "Ning Yao, I like you!" Ning Yao reciprocated the sentiment, cementing their bond.
Back in the Sword Qi Great Wall, Ning Yao commanded the utmost respect of her peers (such as Chen Sanqiu, Yan Zhuo, Die Zhang, and Dong Huafu), easily suppressing all other geniuses of her generation. During the apocalyptic Haoran-Manhuang War, she served on the frontlines, repeatedly executing devastating, array-breaking assaults against the demon armies, proving herself as an unparalleled killing force.
The Five Colored Heaven and Ascensions
When the Sword Qi Great Wall was split, Ning Yao accompanied the younger generation of sword cultivators to the newly formed Five Colored Heaven to establish Feisheng City. Welcomed by the new world's Great Dao, she rapidly broke through the Jade (Yu Pu) and Immortal (Xian Ren) realms.
When the ancient remnant gods of the world attempted to ambush her at the "Sword" (剑) stele, she single-handedly slew a high-tier ancient god and achieved the Ascension Realm (飞升境), officially becoming the undisputed First Person of the Five Colored Heaven.
14th Realm
Despite the heavy restrictions on traveling between worlds, Ning Yao forced her way back to Haoran Heaven to reunite with Chen Ping'an. During a phenomenon known as the "Heavenly Weeping" (天泣)—the Dao dissolution of the Three Teachings' Patriarchs—Ning Yao capitalized on the cosmic rainfall to break through her final bottleneck, officially ascending to the 14th Realm as a Pure Sword Cultivator.
Cultivation & Abilities
- 14th Realm Pure Sword Cultivator (十四境纯粹剑修): Ning Yao's combat power is devastating. Even among 14th-realm cultivators, she is recognized as standing at the very pinnacle of offensive lethality.
- Zhan Xian (斩仙 - Immortal Slaying): Her original natal flying sword. It embodies her pure, aggressive sword intent.
- Tianzhen (天真 - Heavenly Innocence): One of the legendary Four Immortal Swords (四把仙剑) of the world. The sword spirit of Tianzhen, a supreme ancient entity, actively chose Ning Yao as its master due to her unmatched sword heart. Controlling Tianzhen is exceedingly dangerous, as the sword spirit constantly seeks to dominate the wielder, but Ning Yao suppresses it through sheer willpower and realm superiority.
- Array Breaking & Sword Domains: Ning Yao's raw sword aura is so dense and overwhelming that her mere presence on a battlefield functions as an innate sword domain. She can effortlessly conjure ancient sword immortals from pure sword intent to massacre armies.
Relationships
- Chen Ping'an (陈平安): Her Dao Companion. Their mutual absolute trust and affection form the emotional core of the story. While he is meticulous, calculating, and thinks ten steps ahead, she is direct and decisive; they perfectly complement each other.
- Chen Qingdu (陈 都): The Eldest Sword Immortal. He watched over Ning Yao like a protective, albeit strict, grandfather, secretly arranging for her protection and constantly pushing her to lead the next generation.
- Nalan Yexing (纳 夜行) & Bai Lianshuang (白炼霜): The loyal old servants of the Ning Mansion. Both dropped in cultivation realms (Nalan from Immortal to Jade, Bai from 10th-realm Martial Arts to 9th-realm) to protect a young Ning Yao from assassins.
- Guo Zhujiu (郭竹 ): Chen Ping'an's disciple, who affectionately and shamelessly calls Ning Yao "Mistress" (师娘), often acting as a bridge of humor in the otherwise solemn Ning Mansion.
Quotes
- "我宁姚喜欢谁,还需要理由?!" (I, Ning Yao, like whoever I want, do I need a reason?!)
- "飞升城宁姚,来见陈平安!" (Feisheng City's Ning Yao, comes to see Chen Ping'an!)
- "陈平安,就算害得你很辛苦,你也要一直喜欢宁姚。" (Chen Ping'an, even if it makes you suffer and work hard, you must always like Ning Yao.)
Notes
- As a baby during the traditional "Zhuajou" (抓阄 - drawing lots) ceremony to determine her future, Ning Yao ignored the ceremonial skirt-pressing knife offered to her and instead grabbed a heavy piece of the Dragon Slaying Platform (斩龙台), signaling her innate destiny as a pure sword cultivator.
- Ning Yao is universally feared and respected by both allies and enemies. In the Sword Qi Great Wall, there was a common saying among the younger generation: there are two types of sword cultivators—Ning Yao, and everyone else.
