Chen Ping'an's natal flying sword that manifests a Small Heaven and Earth.

Overview

Caged Sparrow (笼中雀) is one of the Natal Flying Swords (本命飞剑) awakened by Chen Ping'an during his time at the Sword Qi Great Wall. A highly unusual and top-tier flying sword, its innate divine ability does not focus on direct, piercing lethality, but rather on spatial isolation and control. When manifested, Caged Sparrow forms an independent Small Heaven and Earth (小天地) that traps enemies within its borders, effectively turning them into "caged sparrows" entirely subjected to the sword cultivator's localized rules.

Mechanisms

The core mechanism of Caged Sparrow is the manifestation of a sealed, self-contained domain. This Small Heaven and Earth temporarily overrides the natural laws of the outside world, pulling enemies into a battlefield completely dictated by Chen Ping'an.

  • Spatial Manipulation & Rule Weight: The scale of the domain can be manipulated according to Chen Ping'an's needs and current cultivation realm. It can encompass a vast area spanning dozens of miles, or it can be heavily compressed into a small, claustrophobic space. By shrinking the domain's perimeter, the localized spatial rules and restrictions become incredibly dense and "heavy," actively suppressing the enemy's spiritual energy, physical movements, and connection to the outside world's Great Dao.
  • Synergy with "Moon in the Well": Caged Sparrow acts as the spatial "shell" or framework (躯壳) of the domain. To complete the battlefield, Chen Ping'an synergizes it with his second natal flying sword, Moon in the Well (井中月 / 井底月), which generates countless minute sword manifestations. In this pairing, Caged Sparrow provides the territorial boundaries and laws, while Moon in the Well acts as the "flesh and blood," filling the space with thousands of sword arrays to replicate true reality and execute the offensive strikes.
  • Refinement and Upgrading: To elevate the grade of Caged Sparrow and perfect its internal laws—such as establishing a complete, flowing River of Time within the cage—the flying sword must "eat" or refine Dragon Slaying Stone (斩龙石), an exceedingly rare and priceless material.
  • Weaknesses: Maintaining and manipulating the Small Heaven and Earth exerts a massive toll on the user's mental energy (耗神) and spiritual Qi. Furthermore, the domain can be countered or fractured by cultivators wielding overwhelming realm superiority (such as the Sword Immortal Pei Min), or by specific flying swords that possess innate abilities to ignore spatial and temporal boundaries, such as Liu Cai's flying sword, White Foal (白驹).

Origin / Lineage

The sword naturally awakened within Chen Ping'an's acupoints while he was residing and cultivating at the Sword Qi Great Wall. It received its name from Chen Qingdu, the Eldest Sword Immortal. During a sudden trial where Chen Qingdu pulled Chen Ping'an into a martial arts manifestation to test him, Chen Ping'an instinctively deployed his newly awakened flying sword to trap Chen Qingdu's avatar within his nascent inner world. Amused and impressed by the young man's method of isolating him, Chen Qingdu praised the technique, remarking, "Trapped within, what a caged sparrow" (置身其中,好一个笼中雀). Chen Ping'an subsequently adopted this phrase as the flying sword's true name.

Known Users

  • Chen Ping'an: The sole awakener and owner of Caged Sparrow. The sword's cautious, enclosure-based ability perfectly reflects Chen Ping'an's meticulous nature, as it allows him to isolate variables and dictate the terms of engagement in a life-or-death battle.
  • Moon in the Well (井中月 / 井底月): Chen Ping'an's second natal flying sword. It is intrinsically linked to Caged Sparrow in combat, providing the offensive sword arrays that populate the isolated domain.
  • Dragon Slaying Stone (斩龙石): The essential and incredibly scarce resource required to feed and upgrade Caged Sparrow's spatial stability and rank.
  • White Foal (白驹): A flying sword belonging to the swordsman Liu Cai. Its innate ability to bypass the constraints of the River of Time and spatial domains makes it a direct natural counter to Caged Sparrow.

Notes

  • In Chen Ping'an's most advanced applications of the sword, such as during the coordinated assault against the Tuoyue Mountain mastermind Yuanxiong, Caged Sparrow was used to project detailed, hyper-realistic environments—mimicking real-world Dao fields like Baidi City's Liuli Pavilion—by using the spatial cage as a blank canvas and Moon in the Well as the brush.
  • The sword's domain effectively serves as a massive tactical advantage for Chen Ping'an's martial arts, as it prevents enemies from using fleeing techniques or escaping his devastating close-quarters punches.
